Disaster Recovery for Public-Facing Healthcare App

The Client:

The NHS was founded in 1948 on the long-held belief that good healthcare should be available to all in the UK, regardless of wealth. 

The Challenge:

The NHS required a robust disaster recovery solution for its Patient Engagement Platform (PEP), a critical app used by 3.6 million people to manage hospital appointments and engage with healthcare services. Zero data loss and uninterrupted service were paramount, as any downtime could impact patient care and operational efficiency. The solution needed to be secure, scalable, and compliant with stringent healthcare regulations.

The Solution:

Our team, in partnership with Microsoft, developed a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) solution hosted on Microsoft Azure, which enabled patients to easily manage hospital appointments through the NHS booking app. The system used a Hub and Spoke architecture across two Azure regions to ensure regional failover and data replication. Azure Traffic Manager was deployed to manage failover between regions, while Private Endpoints, WAF, and DDoS protection safeguarded data and ensured privacy. SQL database replication, along with strict security measures, provided continuous availability of services with no risk of data loss.

The Outcome:
  • Zero data loss: Achieved through continuous replication and encrypted data storage. 
  • Uninterrupted service: Failover between regions ensured continuous availability for 3.6 million users. 
  • Enhanced security: Utilised Private Endpoints, encryption, and active monitoring to meet strict healthcare regulations.
